Equine Attorney – Steven M. Tarshis, Esq.

Earning Trust & Respect in the Law Community
Steven M. Tarshis’s journey as an equine attorney began in New York, where he was born and raised. After earning a B.S. from Queens College, City University of New York, he pursued his Juris Doctor at Syracuse University College of Law, gaining admission to the New York Bar. Steven initially practiced law on Wall Street, later expanding his credentials by joining the New Jersey Bar, as well as the Southern and Eastern District Courts of New York, the District of New Jersey, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He established his own law firm with offices in West Orange, NJ, and New York City, where he practiced for nearly two decades. As his practice grew, he was invited to join Budd Larner, PC in Short Hills, NJ, as counsel and eventually became a partner at Weiner Lesniak, LLP, serving clients across New Jersey and New York City.
Dedication to Equine Law & Equine Attorney Practice
Throughout his career, Steven remained deeply connected to his passion for horses, riding, and competing. However, the demands of institutional law firms limited his ability to fully engage with the equestrian world. In 2008, Steven made a bold decision to combine his professional expertise with his equine passion by opening his own practice and moving to a gentleman’s farm in the heart of Hunterdon County’s equestrian community. This shift allowed Steven to balance his legal work in entrepreneurial ventures, commercial real estate, financing, and litigation with ample time for training, riding, and competing across the East Coast and in Wellington, Florida during the winter season.
During this time, Steven also became involved in standardbred racing, acquiring shared ownership of several racehorses, including the successful “We Will See.” His hands-on experience as a competitor and horse owner gave him a unique perspective on the legal needs of the equine community. This insight led him to dedicate his practice to providing legal services tailored to the industry he loved.
Steven M. Tarshis’ Commitment to Community
Steven’s commitment extended beyond the equestrian world. In 2008, he began a decade-long career of public service in Franklin Township, serving as mayor and on the Township Committee. Notably, he was the only person in the township’s 150-year history to serve two consecutive terms as mayor, during which he played a pivotal role in preserving thousands of acres of farmland and open space—a testament to his dedication to both the community and environmental stewardship.
Recognized for his outstanding legal service, Steven has earned the AV highest Peer Review rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Today, he continues to merge his passions for law, equestrian pursuits, and community service through his firm, EquiLaw, LLC.
